3 Month Lead times, Possible Subject To Machine Shop.
Important: All Delrin pressure dies are machined for 7/8″ diameter pins unless you specify at checkout (in the order notes) that you need 3/4″ pins.
We manufacture these dies from Delrin, a high-lubricity, moderately high-tensile engineered plastic, specifically for bending soft metals like aluminum, especially when the tubing is polished or anodized. Delrin greatly reduces marring and helps preserve surface finish, often eliminating the need for post-bending cleanup.
Use cases:
-
Ideal for aluminum or other soft metals where surface finish is critical
-
It can also be used for mandrel bending when billet aluminum pressure dies are not preferred
-
Not suitable for bending steel or stainless steel without a mandrel. Doing so will result in poor bend quality
Because Delrin is more flexible than aluminum, these dies may produce slightly more deformation in the bend. This is a trade-off: you get excellent surface protection, but there may be minor differences in bend consistency compared to our standard billet aluminum dies. Performance may vary depending on material type and wall thickness.
Common sizes we machine:
-
1.660″ (1 1/4″ pipe) x 6.0″ Center Line Radius
-
1.900″ (1 1/2″ pipe) x 6.0″ CLR
-
1.315″ (1″ pipe) x 6.0″ CLR
-
1.050″ (3/4″ pipe) x 4.5″ CLR
We list these based on Center Line Radius (CLR). Be sure to include your desired tube or pipe diameter in the order notes at checkout.
Note: Delrin has approximately 1/4 the strength of 6061 billet aluminum, so it is best suited for applications with moderate wall thickness and D-ratios. For more details on material and design limits, see the Tech section of our website.
Important Note on Durability:
If the material “folds” during a bend using a Delrin pressure die, the die can crack or break. This type of failure is not a manufacturing defect: it is considered misuse. To prevent this, we strongly recommend either mandrel bending or using conservative wall thicknesses and D-ratios. All Delrin dies are guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship, but damage from improper use is not covered.
Custom Die Options:
We offer custom dies machined from either billet aluminum (like our standard dies) or Delrin. This product listing can be used to place an order for custom-machined dies. Here’s how to choose the right configuration:
Custom Clamp:
Select this option if you’re requesting a clamp block design that we don’t already offer. For example, a clamp for a single 1″ tube or a combo 3/4″ and 7/8″ die is not custom; we already produce those.
However, if you’re looking for something unique, like a clamp that holds two 3/4″ tubes for production bending, that qualifies as custom.
Custom Center Line Radius (CLR):
Our standard CLRs are 2.5″, 3.5″, 4.5″, and 6.0″. In some cases, we can exceed 6″ CLR on small-diameter tubing: for example, a 1.125″ (1 1/8″) x 6.5″ CLR setup is possible.
Before You Order:
There are many limitations to what we can support with custom dies. We may contact you to confirm your application details, or cancel the order if the requested configuration is not feasible.
For example, thin rectangular tubing often cannot be bent without advanced mandrel bending equipment (we’re talking $80k+ industrial systems). If you’re planning to order dies for something like 1″ x 2″ x .065″ wall rectangular tube, we strongly recommend reconsidering.
